6 Steps to Get Out of Burnout

There is only one of you. You have had unique experiences, perspectives, and talents that make you incomparable to anyone else. It can be easy to forget this in the hustle and bustle of life, but it is essential to remember that your true self lies within. Here are six steps to reclaim your happiness and move towards finding and expressing your authentic self.

Step 1: Identify What Makes You Unhappy

The first step in finding your authentic self is identifying what makes you unhappy or stressed. Is it work? Family? Relationships? Figure out what triggers these feelings and start thinking about how you can reduce their impact on your life. It may be time for a career change or a good old-fashioned heart-to-heart with a loved one. No matter the solution, taking the time to identify what makes you unhappy will help you move forward to finding yourself.

Step 2: Set Boundaries

Take a moment to think about all the people in your life who drain your energy or cause stress when they are around. Setting boundaries is essential in reclaiming your happiness and finding yourself again. This means saying no when necessary, setting limits with friends and family, and prioritising yourself instead of others. Establishing boundaries will create more space for contentment in your day-to-day life, making it easier for you to focus on finding yourself again.

Step 3: Reconnect With Nature

Sometimes we need a reminder that there is something bigger than us—much more significant than our everyday problems or worries (this video puts all that into perspective). Reconnecting with nature can help provide this perspective shift by reminding us how small we are compared to the grand scheme of things—which can be pretty calming. Take some time away from technology and digital devices, explore the outdoors, and pick up a hobby, whatever works best for you!

Step 4: Spend Time With Positive People

We all know those who always seem uplifting no matter what’s happening around them—those friends who bring sunshine into our lives without even trying! Spend more time with these people; they will help remind you of all the good things in life and inspire you to find yourself again.

Step 5: Make Time For Self-Reflection

Life can get busy quickly; however, it’s essential not to forget to take time each day for self-reflection—even if it’s just 10 minutes before bed each night. Sam Harris’s Waking Up App is an excellent resource for this. I started with his 10-minute guided meditation, and now I am up to an hour a day. Meditation and mindfulness actually work! Taking some quiet moments alone allows us to check in with ourselves better to understand our thoughts, feelings, and emotions, further helping us stay connected with our true selves.

Step 6: Practice Gratitude Each Day

Gratitude is a potent tool when used correctly; practising gratitude helps us appreciate everything we have rather than constantly wanting more (or, worse yet, dwelling on all we don’t have). Focusing on what we already possess helps remind us of our blessings so that we can stay focused on enjoying every moment rather than worrying about tomorrow.
